The refrigerator is a very significant invention in human history. And due to its advent, the freshness of food can be kept to the full extent. For things like tea, whose taste and aroma have been emphasized, low-temperature preservation can greatly maintain its quality. However, not all types of tea are suitable for being stored in the fridge. Let's have a brief introduction.
If tea has been kept at room temperature for one year, the polyphenols and aromatic matters will be significantly reduced, with the color being darker and the taste being blander, greatly declining the overall quality of the tea. On the contrary, when tea is preserved at low temperatures, no apparent changes in the effective components and quality can be observed. And the effect of frozen storage is similar to that of refrigeration. However, preserving tea in the fridge is not without disadvantages. The quality of the tea stored at low temperature decreases rapidly after the tea is taken out of the refrigerator, so we need to make tea as soon as possible, or put it back in the fridge in time.
There are 3 types of tea that can be stored in the refrigerator.
· Green Tea
We put a high value on the green color and fresh taste of green tea. And storing it in the refrigerator can effectively maintain its quality characteristics. If being placed at room temperature and affected by light, temperature and oxygen, green tea will turn yellow in less than half a year, with its freshness decreasing.
· Oolong
If oolong is kept at room temperature, its aroma will be apt to deteriorate. People pay attention to the aroma of oolong which can be maintained in cold storage.
· Black Tea
Black tea is a fully fermented tea whose speed of getting spoiled is not at fast as green tea when being stored at normal temperature. However, for the tender black tea that is made of buds, to maintain its freshness and refreshing taste, it's best to preserve it in the refrigerator.
And there are 2 types of tea that do not need to be stored in the refrigerator.
· Fermented Tea
The fermented tea is a type of tea that has gone through microbial fermentation, and this is the reason why it gets better with age. If fermented tea is stored in the fridge, the activity of microorganisms will be greatly reduced, which is not conducive to aging. Hence, it's all right to keep it at room temperature and away from light, moisture and peculiar smells.
· White Tea
The technology of white tea is the most primitive, which is without frying and kneading. The active enzymes left in the tea will continue to ferment under the appropriate temperature and humidity. Therefore, to hold different styles and characteristics of white tea, preserve it at room temperature.
Tips for storing tea in the refrigerator:
1. The tea stored in the refrigerator should be dry enough, and if the wet tea is put in the fridge, it will go bad as well.
2. If possible, it is best to vacuum it first with vacuum sealers and put it in the refrigerator for better preservation.
3. Attention must be paid to isolating peculiar smells. Tea can be packed in aluminum foil bags and then put into opaque canisters. Tea in multiple packaging is not easy to be tainted by other odors.
4. The amount of tea you take out from the refrigerator needs to be in accordance with your requirement. Then, seal the packaging well and put it back immediately.
5. Refrigerated tea should be moistened with hot water before being brewed for better tasting.
